Your guide to what the American elections mean 2024 for Washington and the world
The writer is the chief adviser to President Trump for Trade and Manufacturing
The international trade system has been broken – Donald Trump’s mutual tariff doctrine will fix it. The restructuring of these long -term forces will make both the American economies and the United States more flexible and prosperous by restoring fairness and balance to a false system against America.
For decades, according to the biased bases of the World Trade Organization, the United States faced a systematic tariff systematically than its main commercial partners and more non -fire barriers. The result is a state of national emergency that threatens both our economic prosperity and national security.
At the heart of this crisis, there is a commercial deficit in the goods that rose to more than one dollar annually. Economic models of free trade will always be removed that expect chronic commercial imbalances through price adjustments through exchange rates.
The cumulative trade deficit in the United States in the goods since 1976 – the year in which the chronic deficit began – to 2024, has moved more than 20 hyiots of American wealth to foreign hands. This is more than 60 percent of GDP in the United States in 2024. Foreign interests have acquired vast areas of American agricultural land, housing, technology companies, and even parts of our food supplies.
The central driver of this unilateral trade is the “most preferred nation” base for the World Trade Organization (MFN), which requires member states to implement the lowest tariff to any one country to all members of the World Trade Organization. Trade partners in America can maintain a high and unified tariff in all fields – without any incentive to negotiate more fair conditions with the United States.
Since 1979, the year that peaked in job manufacturing in America and Tokyo’s tour of the general agreement on definitions and trade in the MFN tariff discounts has lost the United States has lost 6.8 million manufacturing functions. Since China joined the World Trade Organization in 2001, the average weekly profits in the United States have increased significantly – with more than 10 percent over the entire period.
Today, the average American MFN tariff is only 3.3 percent. China is twice that of 7.5 percent. Thailand and Vietnam hovering near 10 percent and India stands amazing 17 percent. The defect extends to cars: The European Union receives four times the tariff of American cars by 10 percent for salon cars, a tariff for the import of the Chinese base for passenger cars by 25 percent.
Worse than this is a hail of unacceptable weapons that foreign countries use to strangle US exports, unrelently increase their shipments to the United States, and bypass their own markets. These tools include currency processing, value -added tax deformities, dumping, export benefits, state -owned institutions, IPft, discriminatory products standards, shares, ban, non -dark licensing systems, stressful customs procedures, increasingly localizing data, using “Lawfare” in places like Eu in America. Moreover, many foreign competitors of a group of blues and pollution are staining the global scene in terms of moral and environmental from Asia and Africa to Latin America.
Although the World Trade Organization technically allows challenges, its dispute settlement system is functionally broken – the consequences were disastrous. The United States has brought many prominent agricultural trade conflicts on the World Trade Organization-targeting a foreign ban on poultry, hormone treated beef, and genetically modified crops. In almost every case, the United States prevailed. But the victories were not important. The European Union’s ban was challenged on hormone -treated American beef in 1996, illegal ruling in 1998, however the European Union was not raised.
The trade system where we face a higher tariff, and non -sharp barriers other than fire, and there is no viable path to the decision, nothing more than the “honor system” in a world without honor between cheaters. For this reason, America – and now – must defend itself.
Trump’s mutual tariff doctrine is what the World Trade Organization failed to do: it holds foreign countries accountable. The United States will now coincide with highly high definitions and crushing the non -transmitted barriers imposed on us by other countries. This is about fairness, and no one can argue with that.
This is not negotiations. For the United States, it is a national emergency caused by the trade deficit caused by a forged system.
President Trump is always ready to listen. But for world leaders who, after decades of fraud, they suddenly offer a low tariff – they know this: this is just a beginning.
We will want to hear from countries including Cambodia, Mexico and Vietnam that you will stop allowing China to evade the American customs tariff through exports via shipment across your countries. The biggest threat lies in the non -carrier network that still suffocates American industries. This, too, must end.
All that America wants is fairness. President Trump simply receives what he charges for us. What is more fair than that?
