Wildfires are raging in the Los Angeles area, and the president-elect is blaming California Governor Gavin Newsom So. Wednesday (January 8) Donald Trump He criticized Newsom on social media for the fiery devastation that has so far left two people dead and thousands displaced.

Office of Governor Newsom Responds to Trump’s message
Trump delivered his harsh retraction via Truth Social. He began by addressing Newsom as “Governor Gavin Newsom” and then claimed that the California wildfires were caused by the politician’s refusal to sign a “Water Restoration Proclamation.” Trump wrote that the legislation “would allow millions of gallons of water” from rain and snowmelt in the North to flow daily to other parts of the state. “…including areas that are currently burning in an almost horrific way,” The president-elect added.
Donald Trump also claimed that Governor Gavin Newsom wanted to protect an endangered species of fish called the delta smelt over Californians. This species lives in the Sacramento-San Joaquin River delta. In 2019, environmentalists and Cali officials reportedly opposed adding more water to the river because it could mean the extinction of salmon, smelt and steelhead. At the time, the Trump administration wanted to send more water to farmers downstate. Note that it’s unclear whether Trump’s water policy recommendation would prevent California’s current wildfires or help tame them.
“Now the ultimate price is being paid. I will demand that this incompetent governor allow beautiful, clean, fresh water to flow into California! He is responsible for this. And on top of that, there is no water for the fire hydrants, and no firefighting planes. A true disaster,” Trump said.
After Trump’s message went viral, the governor’s office set the record straight. Newsom’s communications director, Izzy Jardon, He told USA Today There is no document called “Water Restoration Declaration.” Jardon described this part of Trump’s message as “pure fantasy.” Furthermore, the Communications Director shared how the California Governor is focusing his efforts on the fire.
“The governor is focused on protecting people, not playing politics, and making sure firefighters have all the resources they need,” Jardon added.
Newsom has reportedly canceled his scheduled appearance at former President Jimmy Carter’s funeral on Thursday (Jan. 9).

What we know about the California wildfires
While Trump was appearing on Truth Social, Californians had to flee at least three separate wildfires, Per The New York Times. The fires began burning on Tuesday and spread quickly thanks to the dry and windy season, including in Santa Anse. The Associated Press said dry winds increased to 80 miles per hour Early Wednesday. Now, forecasters are predicting speeds of up to 100 mph in the mountains and foothills, making California’s wildfires difficult to contain.

The Los Angeles area is shrouded in a thick cloud of ash and smoke as thousands of firefighters battle the flames. The local fire department is asking other off-duty and out-of-state firefighters to join in their plight. However, more than 1,000 structures, including homes, were destroyed across 22 square miles, according to the AP.
