Could Ukraine be about to hold elections?

With the bombing of Ukrainian cities almost at night by Russia, the idea of ​​holding the elections here may seem fictional.

But in the streets and offices of the capital, the possibility of going to the polls is discussed again.

The election rumors came and went in the three long years of war on a large scale in Russia.

Every time they are rejected by the government, the opposition and the public alike, they argue the unity of the voltage against the Russian invaders that must come first.

The presidential elections scheduled for 2024 were suspended in line with the martial law, which was presented in Ukraine after Russia’s invasion of two years ago.

But this did not prevent the Kremlin from demanding President Voludimir Zelinski, an illegitimate leader and demands the new elections as a ceasefire condition – a discussion point repeated by President Trump.

Now there has been a new wave of speculation that Zelinski may consider again as the ceasefire talks continued, and some sources that talk to the BBC indicate that there are reasons for the belief that the elections may be progressing later this year.

Valery Zaluzni, the former commander of the Ukraine army, felt the need to deny rumors about his intentions.

“My answer to this has not changed,” he told the news agency at RBC-Ukraine. “While the war continues, we all need to work to save the country, not thinking about the elections. I do not comment on any rumors.”

The shy Zalogyi currently, the Ambassador of Ukraine in London, felt the need to issue a statement that was amazing in itself.

The head of the Central Elections Committee in Ukraine, Oil Didinco, chose to publicly talk about speculation.

He told Oldnska Braveda that the law should be changed before any elections. He said that the current rules stated that the parliamentary elections should be held 60 days after the lifting of martial law, and 90 days for the presidential elections.

But more time will be needed due to war and this requires legal changes.

Economist Newspaper claimed to hold a meeting last week to discuss the elections and ordered the employees to prepare to vote once the United States forced Russia to accept a ceasefire, which is likely to be early in Easter.

This report has been rejected by many government sources.

“There is fake information there,” a presidential source told the Ukrainian BBC News. “There was no such meeting and there was no such education.”

The government source said that the main focus is to achieve peace and there was no great hope in the war that ends in Easter.

So in the face of many general denials, why still some believe that the elections may be in the future?

First, some sources have noticed Zelinski’s support for opinion polls since Donald Trump and Vice President JD Vance at the White House.

A survey conducted by the Kiev International Sociology Institute (KIIS) suggested in March that the number of Ukrainians who documented in Zelinski increased a few points in the previous month by 69 %.

Diplomats say the president may now believe that he is his best chance to win a second term instead of waiting for political divisions after the war.

Second, by winning a second term, Zelensky was calling Russia a trick and strengthening his hand in any long -term peace negotiations. President Vladimir Putin said last week that the United Nations should take over Ukraine and organize “democratic presidential elections.” His assumption – perhaps a mistake – is that Zellinsky will be replaced.

Third, martial law must be renewed by parliamentary vote in early May. Zelensky can use this timetable to announce martial mutation by explosion with the elections that were held later in the summer.

Zelinski can use this pressure from the United States – echoing Russian novels – as an excuse, the voters told that he had no choice but to hold elections.

Fifth, some Ukrainian sources believe the logistical obstacles to the elections.

Millions of citizens are displaced abroad, on the line of confrontation and the occupied lands. The answer to this, as some say, is to allow people to vote using a smartphone application called DIIA. This contains basic documents for people such as a passport, an ID card and drivers license.

Using DIIA, some argue that would allow people to vote quickly, at a cheap and safe price without the need to travel to the ballot booth abroad or in trenches. They point out that the Ukrainians have successfully used it to vote in the European song competition. They also notice that President Zelensky gave all nearly 20 Ukrainian pounds as an alternative in the winter last December, where he recorded many records using DIIA.

But there are still many arguments against the elections.

The use of DIIA will require new legislation that may struggle to obtain parliament. DIIA can be vulnerable to electronic attack and technical failure. Western governments may not consider them worthy; Russia certainly will not.

Even if DIIA is used, determining those who can vote will continue to take time with incomplete and incomplete records.

The lifting of martial law during the temporary ceasefire may create unexpected consequences – including hundreds of thousands of soldiers from the confrontation line – just as Russia has prepared a counter -attack. Russia can strike the waiting lists for voters at the polling stations.

Any elections, though soon, will allow the replacement of the unity of wartime with political ranks. The elections would allow Russia to spread digital propaganda and other advertising to try to form the result.

Elections may also be seen as accepting the Russian arguments that the leadership of Volodymyr Zelensky is illegal due to the elections suspended last year.

Perhaps the strongest argument against the elections is that the Ukrainians themselves do not want them. The same March survey, conducted by Kiis, found about 78 % of people who opposed the elections even after a complete settlement of the war.
