Chris Wood scored a second consecutive trilogy for New Zealand while they were towards the World Cup place-and he was booked to sign the signatures in the stands.

Wood, 33, struck a trilogy in the defeat of his 7-0 team for Figi in the World Cup qualifiers on Friday and was replaced by a permanent applause after his third goal in Witzton.

Nottingham Forest’s striker went directly to the stands to sign signatures and take his photo with fans.

However, Wood’s work of goodwill incurred the anger of referee Norbert Hawata, who warned the attacker as he returned to the side of the stadium because the game was still continuing.

“If these are the rules, these are the rules,” Wood said. “I was doing something nice and trying to sign the fans.”

The new All White Cledonia will meet in the Oceania qualifiers final in Auckland on Monday, where they are trying to reserve the first place for the World Cup since South Africa 2010.

Wood enjoyed a great season in the Premier League and also scored a trilogy in the previous qualifiers for New Zealand last year, by beating Samoa 8-0.

He added: “We know how much new Calidonia quality and we will have to be ready for them.
