Chhattisgarh couple breaks tradition, takes ‘oath on the Indian Constitution’ instead of 7 paragraphs

A couple from Kapu village in Chhattisgarh made headlines with their unique choice for their wedding. Instead of adhering to traditional customs, they chose to take an oath to the Indian Constitution during their marriage. The couple expressed their confidence in the constitution more than their confidence in traditional marriage rituals.

According to The Times of India, Pratima Lahar (bride) and Iman Lahar (groom) tied the knot on December 18 without following community practices like ‘Sath pheras’ or ‘Band Baaja’. Their decision to abandon customary rituals, including Sindoor and Mangal Sutra celebrations, was praised by many, including people from their own community.

The couple chose to take oath based on the Indian Constitution, and pledged to support each other for life. They made their promise in front of a picture of Dr BR Ambedkar, the architect of the Constitution. To mark the occasion, they exchanged wreaths and walked around the statue of Dr. Ambedkar, officially declaring their union.

Explaining the reason behind this unique choice, Iman Laher, the groom, said: “This type of marriage saves huge expenses. We decided to tie the knot with the approval of our families, avoiding unnecessary expenses,” The Times of India reported.

The wedding sparked significant debate within the state, with many hailing it as a “meaningful approach to marriage.” Some have even suggested that such celebrations could serve as examples for others. The couple’s parents and community members expressed their support, offering blessings to the newlyweds for their unconventional choice.

The ceremony was held at Kapu village, located in Chhattisgarh’s Jashpur district, about 350 km from Raipur and far from the hustle and bustle of Parliament House in Delhi. The couple, hailing from the Satnami community, chose December 18 for their wedding, coinciding with the birth anniversary of Guru Gasidas.
