The drama unfolded in the 71st minute of India’s chase as Pat Cummins delivered a short ball aimed at Yashasvi Jaiswal’s leg, with the field fully prepared for the shot. Jaiswal tried to pull the ball, but the ball hit the bottom edge of his glove and went straight at the wicket-keeper, Alex Carey, who raced forward to take a brilliant catch just inches from the ground.
Although the on-field umpire did not think there was any advantage, the Australian cricketers were confident and decided to review the decision, bringing the third umpire into the picture. The replay showed no spike in the ball tracking system or any clear sound to indicate that the ball had hit Yashavi’s bat.
But the third umpire said that the ball was clearly deflected due to it touching the bottom of the glove and relied on visual evidence and overturned the decision, as Yashavi had to leave after making 84 runs from 208 balls, with 8 boundaries to his name. .
