Canada will deal with Donald Trump “our conditions”

Canadian Prime Minister Mark Carney said that his country deserves respect from the United States and will only enter trade and security talks with President Donald Trump “our terms.”

Speaking exclusively to the BBC with the closure of opinion polls, Carney said he would only visit Washington when there was a “serious discussion” who respected Canada’s sovereignty.

Carney, who won a historic victory for his liberal party in early elections on Monday, said that such a scenario “never happened.”

The United States is a large market for Canadian companies with approximately 75 % of Canada’s exports heading south.

Canada represents 17 % of US exports.

Canada is also the largest foreign resource in America of crude oil. The trade deficit of America with Canada – was expected to be $ 45 billion in 2024 – is mostly driven by US energy requirements.

Relations between Canada and the United States have been strained in recent months, driven by Trump’s talk about “Country 51”, referring to former Prime Minister Justin Trudeau as a “ruler” – the title of leaders of individual American states.

The US President also sparked a global trade war in which Canada was one of the first countries to target definitions.

Trump partially imposed a 25 % blanket tariff on various Canadian commodities, along with 25 % import taxes on all aluminum and steel imports, but exempt from products covered by a commercial deal in the United States, Canada and Mexico known as USMCA.

Canada has taken revenge on some customs tariffs of $ 60 billion ($ 42 billion; 32 billion pounds) for American goods.

Carney said the talks with Trump will be “our terms, not their conditions.”

“There is a partnership for economic and security partnership,” he said.

“It will be completely different from what we have done in the past.”

Carney described his experience in dealing with global economic crises as a way to deal with Trump on the customs tariff.

Before the Prime Minister became in early March, Carney did not occupy a political position.

The Prime Minister said Canada was “the largest agent of more than 40 states” in the United States.

“We deserve respect. We expect respect and I am sure that we will get it in time again, and then we can hold these discussions.”

Canada and the United States, along with Mexico, have integrated economies deeply, with billions of pounds of manufactured goods that cross the border on a daily basis, for example, auto parts.

The introduction of the customs tariff, which is imposed on goods on goods upon entering a state and paying it by the importer, threatens contracts of cooperation between states.

Trump has argued that the definitions will encourage more Americans to buy locally made goods, which will eventually enhance manufacturing and jobs.

While the main opponent of America in the global trade conflict is China, the introduction of the Trump blanket, the so -called “mutual definitions” about the likes of the United Kingdom and other European countries, led to the search for new agreements in response to barriers that prevent trading with the largest economy in the world.

“One can believe that” Canada and the United Kingdom can sign the parked free trade agreement as part of the diversification of trade, but it has highlighted about 95 % of trade between countries already free from customs tariffs, “said Carney, who supported the UK Chancellor Rachel Reeves during the British general elections.

“We can expand the level of integration between our countries, and the similar countries in thinking. You are thinking about defense partnerships, and those conversations have just started, so there is a lot that we can do,” he added.

In a statement congratulating Carney, the UK Prime Minister Sir Kerr Starmer said: “I know that we will continue to work closely on defense, security, trade and investment.”

Carney said that the Group of Seven Summit hosted by Canada in June will be “very important” in the future path of the global trade war, adding that it would “test” whether the group of seven most advanced economies in the world – which includes the United States – is still “the most similar countries in thinking.”

The summit will take place before the 90 -day stopping on some Trump’s upper tariffs.
