Reflecting on how the family navigated the journey of caring for Bruce amid his struggle with dementia, Emma explained that it was essential to be honest with their children.
“What I learned from our therapist is that if kids ask questions, they are willing to know the answer,” she told the publication. “If we could see that Bruce was suffering, I would talk about it with the kids so they could understand, but this disease is chronic, progressive and terminal.”
The actress admitted that she chose to focus on the present with her children, noting that she “doesn’t like to talk about the last aspect of this with them, and they haven’t asked for it.”
However, Emma noted that their young daughters “know that Dad is not going to get better.”
