Brazilian Supreme Court judges are discussing whether former President Geer Bolsonaro should be tried for a coup attempt against the current president, Luiz Inosio Lula da Silva.
A committee of five members of the Supreme Court will weigh the evidence presented by the prosecutors, who accuses Polsonaro of leading a conspiracy to prevent his opponent from taking office after the latter’s victory in the 2022 elections.
Bolsonaro, 70, says he is a victim of “political persecution” who aims to prevent him from running again to the president in 2026.
The judges are expected to decide before the end of Wednesday if there is sufficient evidence of the case for trial.
Bolsonaro has already been prevented from running for public positions until 2030 To falsely claim that the Brazil vote system was subject to fraud, but it announced his intention to fight this ban so that he could run for a second period in 2026.
Bolsonaro, former army commander and admirer of US President Donald Trump, is ruled by Brazil from January 2019 to December 2022.
He lost difficulty in the presidential election round in October 2022 against his left opponent, Lula.
Bolsonaro has not publicly admitted his defeat. Many of his supporters spent weeks in the camps outside the army barracks in an attempt to persuade the army to prevent Lula’s constitutional oath as president as scheduled on January 1, 2023.
A week after Lula inaugurated, on January 8, 2023, thousands of supporters of Bolsonaro stormed government buildings in the capital, Brazilia, while Federal investigators say it is a coup attempt.
Parts of the buildings were looted and the police arrested 1500 people.
Polsonaro was in the United States at the time, and he has always denied any ties to rioters.
Federal police investigations were launched in the riots and the events that led to it.
Investigators said they found evidence of the existence of a “criminal organization” “who acted in a coordinated manner” to preserve President Bolsonaro in power at the time.
Their 884 -page report, which was canceled in November 2024, claimed that “then President Gear Messiam Bolsonaro plans and behavior, and was directly realized and effective the criminal actions of the organization aimed at launching a coup and eliminating the rule of democratic law.”
The Brazilian Prosecutor, Paulo Gonet, went further in his report published last monthWhere he accused Bolsonaro of not only realizing it, but to lead the criminal organization, which he says sought to overthrow Lula.
According to the Gonet report, the alleged plot included a LULA poisoning plan and fire on Alexander de Morris – one of the five Supreme Court judges who are now assigned to decide whether the case should proceed with the trial.
The five -member committee will now have to determine whether there is sufficient evidence to put Bolsonaro and seven others accused of being conspiring in the trial.
Bolsonaro denied any violations throughout Monday, and once again confirmed that he was innocent.
Speaking of radio podcast, the former president said he was “absolutely worried about accusations” and that he is “good lawyers” representing him.
