Former President of Brazil, Gear Bolsonaro, will face a trial on an alleged coup plot aimed at maintaining power in power after losing his re -election in 2022.

On Wednesday, the Supreme Court voted to allow criminal measures against the arduous right -wing populism and seven other defendants, among the former defense and justice ministers, the head of intelligence and the commander of the navy.

Public prosecutors accuse them of conspiracy to prevent the delivery of power to the democratic elected left, Luiz Inosio Lula da Silva.

Bolsonaro, 70, is facing a possible prison sentence if he is convicted of the leadership of an armed criminal organization and a violent cancellation of the rule of law and a coup.

The eight defendants, including Bolsonaro, are facing other interests related to riots in Brazilia on January 8, 2023, when supporters of the national congressional congregation, the high protection, the Supreme Court and the Presidential Palace.

Prosecutors said that the agitation was a recent attempt to overthrow had it not been for a week after he took office. Bolsonaro was outside the country at the time.

All eight defendants have denied the charges.

Police investigators claimed that the Brazilian democracy plan also included plans to assassinate Lula and his vice president and justice of the Supreme Court at the end of 2022.

The case will continue after approval by all members of a committee of five judges in the Supreme Court in Brazil. The trial can start in the coming weeks and legal experts believe that the ruling is likely to be before the end of the year.

In total, 34 individuals were charged with his alleged involvement in the plot. The Supreme Court in Brazil did not decide whether the rest would face criminal procedures.
