Over the years of mattress testing, we’ve refined the process focusing on a few key factors: firmness, feel, durability, and performance. We evaluate each bed with the average sleeper in mind.
Firmness and feeling
Firmness and feeling are the first things we evaluate. It helps narrow down the family that’s right for you. Think of firmness as how firm or soft the mattress is. Feel is where we deal with mattresses. How does the bed bounce when we move on it? Does it have the traditional feel of a memory foam mattress, or is it more like bouncy latex foam? The firmness and feel of each bed was noted in our reviews.
durability
We can estimate the durability of a mattress based on the material it is made of. Pocketed coils help hybrid mattresses last longer than all-foam mattresses because they have more structure. Foam mattresses are more prone to sagging. That’s why many people choose to spend more and get a hybrid mattress.
Edge support
When we say edge support, we’re talking about how strong the perimeter of the mattress is. The best hybrid mattresses tend to perform well in this category. During testing, we rest on each edge of the bed to determine its sturdiness. It doesn’t have good support if we feel like we might get carried away.
Motion isolation
Motion isolation is important for people who have a partner who moves at night. You don’t want this movement to wake you up. We jump and bounce on the bed to test how much motion is transmitted through the bed. Additionally, we place a cup of water on the mattress and roll over to see if it turns over.
temperature
Sleeping hot is one of the most common inconveniences people face. We look at the materials and construction of the mattress to evaluate how hot or cold the bed is. Some materials like gel memory foam and variable phase covers can help prevent you from overheating during the night.
