We go to great lengths when testing the firmness and feel of each mattress.
Our nine mattress experts have been testing and reviewing mattresses for years. from family to Travel pillows to Sleep headphonesWe have experience in all fields. At this point, our team has tested about three hundred mattresses collectively. Along the way, we’ve established a testing methodology that every mattress undergoes at our Reno testing facility.

Our team of experts includes people of all genders, body types and sleeping positions, which helps us ensure we represent all types of people.
Firmness
Firmness is one of the most important factors we need to perform mattress evaluations for you. When testing, we evaluate and record two degrees of reliability: subjective and objective. the Self-package It is our team’s experience with the bed. When I lie in bed, I test it in each sleeping position and notice how it feels on my back, hips, and stomach. The whole team does this, and we evaluate the bed.
After the team tested and found the mattress’s subjective rating, CNET uses the Mattress Smasher 9000 to get an objective score. This orange machine objectively measures how firm a bed is based on the strength of a 160-pound person.
Motion isolation
Motion isolation test with a cup of water on end and flop. It has passed.
Motion isolation describes how well the bed mitigates movement across the surface. If you sleep with someone else who moves a lot or have a furry friend jumping on and off the bed, you know how important motion isolation is.
We test motion isolation in two ways. First, I lie on the bed and close my eyes. Then a team member moves on the bed next to me, varying the degree of movement to get the full picture. Second, we do the water test, which involves rolling toward and away from a cup of water on the edge of the bed. We notice how much the water moves and whether the glass turns over or not.
Edge support
Edge support is the strength of the perimeter of the bed. This is a big factor if you’re like me and tend to sleep on the edge of the bed. To test edge support, we sit and lie on the edge of each bed and test and evaluate the amount of collapse. If I feel like I might fall, it means it doesn’t have good edge support.
temperature
How well a bed regulates temperature is especially important for hot sleepers. To ensure consistency, all of CNET’s mattress testing is conducted in a temperature-controlled room. In addition to evaluating our direct experience with the bed, we also examined its construction to determine if it included any cooling properties.
