Aston Villa Unai Emery, head of his team, explained how he was “proud” of his team after his performance against Paris Saint -Germain, but he insisted on deserved to play in the Champions League again.
Villa went to the match that faced a 3-1 deficit in its total after the defeat at The Parc Des Princesss last week, before giving up two early goals to Achraf Hakimi and Nuno Mendes at the opening 30 minutes of the second stage in Villa Park.
Youi Tientans pulled out before the first half, as Captain John McGin and Azri Konsa hit two minutes after restart to re-finish finishing the result that is fine in 5-4 in a tie.
Villa had opportunities to take advantage of the level of Marco Asensio, play against his mother club, and Konda, but in the end it was short before bowing from competition with their heads high.
“I am very proud of everything we did,” Emery said Amazon Prime.
“Getting to this level is the best step forward to reach where I want to be with Aston Villa.
“We competed well in the first stage, but not enough. We were better today and we were close to returning. The last step forward is still (missing), and this is the only (side) that I want to work on.”
Villa is now facing a short shift before another crucial clash, as they host his colleagues chasing the Newcastle Champions League, Live on Sky SportsThis Saturday. Magpies currently sits in fourth, two points before a villa in seventh place, with a game on hand.
Emery continued at his press conference: “The players have shown the ability. We beat Bayern Munich and won tonight, the players showed their ability to this level, and they are here because they deserve to be here and face matches like today.
“I want a club that has the same challenges I face – add more quality players if we need it – they are proud of these players, and I am sure that we will get our goals until the last game we will face.”
McGinn: We have come a long way
The captain of a villa started in the second half after it was driving depths to half of PSG and shot in the upper corner. He insists, despite the exit from the competition, the team can be proud of their efforts and the journey they were.
McGinn signed with Villa from Hibernian in 2018 and played a major role in his rise from the second level of English football to competition with Elite in Europe.
And he told Amazon Prime. “We have come a long way. We were, near the night. We shortened a little.
“We have had opportunities to take the game to an additional time, but we have to be proud of the way we went back against one of the best teams in the world, to fight to the end.
“We want more. We want to return here next season and we will do our best to do so.”
When asked what Emery said in the first half, when his team was still staring at a barrel of 5-2 deficit in a total, McGin added: “I am proud of the performance, continue to continue, you never know.”
“We have never surrendered. It was chaos, but we have ever provided everything and I think every supporter of Aston Villa will leave a great feeling of pride.”
Konsa: We will return!
KONSA repeated the claims made by his manager and captain, while he also pointed to the opportunity he lost when the Marcus Rashford cross over the goal, but the defender failed to make the necessary contact from the point.
“I am proud of the children,” KONSA said. “We killed the two goals at first, but we showed a great and personal belief to return to them. We won in the second stage, but it was not enough.
“At the end of the first half, we felt that we had nothing to lose. We wanted to go there and prove a point. We had opportunities, and I think I scored the most difficult one. I don’t think we could do more.
“Donnarumma has made some excellent saving operations. We have shown tonight that we can compete at the highest level and want to do this again next season.”
Enrique: PSG has not been dominated in this way before
Luis Enrique, President of Paris Saint -Germain, admitted the vibrant performance of Villa, and claimed that he had not seen a team “dominating” his team in this way before traveling to West Midlands.
“I do not think that this team was controlled by a team in this way, but the opponent had to bear the risks because they were getting out of the competition.
“They attacked with real intensity and in front of a large crowd as well. We will improve with this experience.
“I was not happy at the end of the first half. We were playing at a level that the Champions League did not waste. Then in the second half, we were really suffering and it was a villa in a tie.”
