Via video chat last month, io9 spoke with Scott about it all. He discussed his first reactions to Season 2, what fans were like, and how things have changed in the Lumon offices. Germain Lussier, io9: Fans had to wait almost three years to find out what would happen next with to cut Staff, but I’m wondering, how long did you have to wait to get the scripts and find out what was going on, and what were your reactions to getting them?

Adam Scott: Before there are actual scripts, Dan (Erickson, showrunner) tends to map out the season. So I had a rough idea of ​​the direction and arc of the season before we started getting scripts. So it’s been really interesting to see how far he’ll take the story this season. Because in the first season, originally, the story went a little further than it ended up. Then Ben (Stiller, executive producer) said, “Oh, that line, ‘She’s alive,’ that’s a great place to end the season.” And so Dan ended up discovering that as the dividing line between the seasons. So to see how far we’ll go and what it’ll be like is really interesting and fun. So I have to have that information before scripts of any kind.

io9: During this wait, have people come up to you asking when the show will return? What is this like?

Scott: Yeah, and I think it was September or something, Apple announced the release date of January 17th. And it was so nice to be able to tell people when. Because people ask me several times a day about season two. I understand that. It’s been a long time. So it was great to be able to say “January 17th.” But now it will come within weeks. So it’s cool. It’s so wonderful that people are as patient as they are, and willing to wait this long.

io9: We didn’t really have a choice, but I agree.

Scott: Yes, this is correct.

io9: I’ve watched two episodes of the season and without spoiling anything, Eni Mark seems completely invested in getting answers. Obviously you’re always the main character, but in this season, I almost see him as a stand-in for the audience. He’s not playing. Do you agree with that and how has that changed your performance this season?

Scott: Well, I think the piece of information that Mark found out at the end of Season 1… Season 1, we saw him gradually become disillusioned with Lomon, which was this place he believed in so wholeheartedly. His entire identity and life were built on this place. He was disappointed by that. But I think by the time Episode IX started and they escaped, he felt like he had reached the ceiling of what he thought Lomon’s corruption could be. So, I think finding this piece of information, it blew the roof off any expectation of what was thought possible, like quote “evil,” or terrible things that a company or people could do to each other. So I think we start off season two where he’s brought back into this situation where he’s now beyond disillusionment. Now he’s in a place where he needs answers and needs to know what exactly he’s supposed to do with this information and if there’s a way to get it to his place.

io9: It’s a unique offering because you have the internals and the externals. They are different people, on the surface. So I’m wondering, am I right in assuming that it’s more fun to play as Enni Mark?

Scott: I don’t know. I love playing both. I think they’re just different parts of the same person. I think they are all the same man. But there are things I like to play with both.

io9: I see. Now, these days, there are so many shows out there, especially with streaming, that it’s rare for it to actually be one of the shows that becomes a hit. Looking back at Season 1, at what point did you realize, “Oh, I’m on a show that everyone’s talking about”?

Scott: We made the first season in a bubble. We had no idea if anyone would watch or like it. So when it came out, we were all holding our breath. But I think when I started hearing terms from the show like “innie” and “outtie,” things like that are in the culture on the podcast or referenced anywhere, I think that’s when I realized we had kind of figured out. It was strange to hear that there. Suddenly, when we talked about texts and story or whatever, we had to start sending secure emails with code words. Throughout the first season, which took place over a few years, no one cared about anything we were doing. We didn’t have to hide anything. Suddenly, it was this kind of secret, closed-door thing we were doing. It was really fun and weird to suddenly have this show that people cared so much about.

io9: And as someone who’s done a lot of great TV shows, what is this about? to cut Does this look different?

Scott: I don’t know. I think the world that Dan and Ben have created kind of looks and feels like nothing else out there. And I think it’s a testament to the audience that they’re willing to continue with a show like this that throws so many curveballs at them and so much mystery.
