Sabina Graves, io9: LLet’s talk about your journey with Sonic As tails. What an act Sonic What did he mean to you growing up and what was it like to jump on board to voice the character?
Colin O’Shaughnessy: for me Sonic The flight is long, which is very great. My first entry to Sonic The universe is where you played Charmy Bee (Sonic) Colors —(That) was the first game, the first game where I voiced Charmy. This was about four years before I voiced Tails. I was auditioning for the show Sonic Boom AI booked Tails, then came the video games. And here we are 10 years later, and he’s on the big screen, and it’s incredible. Very amazing. This franchise is very exciting. Fans are definitely very excited about this franchise, which is a very nice thing. I am very honored to be a part of it, AAnd for a long time – it was great.
io9: In this movie, we see more of Tails jumping into his role and being on the field. I know he was nervous about that in the last movie. Can you talk about what it felt like to see that journey and evolution with the movie franchise character?
O’Shaughnessy: Yes, I like that. Because for the second movie, it’s the beginning of his and Sonic’s journey together. This is where they meet each other, so it’s like the beginning of their story. He was very nervous. It’s like meeting one of your heroes and, you know, hoping he lives up to expectations. Now he gains his own abilities in this movie. He is more confident, feels part of the team, part of the family. And they’re all just great friends and buddies and teammates.
io9: Yes, I love the themes of the movie. I think that’s one of the biggest things that makes this film franchise resonate with audiences. I grew up with games and I’m sure you grew up with them Sonic In various forms before joining the cast. What is it about this particular story that really resonated with you, that you would love to bring to audiences now?
O’Shaughnessy: I love that there is something for everyone. They took this to such an epic level. You know, there’s adventure, there’s action, but there’s still humor and heart and family. It covers all the bases, and it’s so fun and so cool to see. Truly, there is something for everyone. You can see it with your kids, with your parents, and everything in between.
io9: What was the process like finding this version of Tails’ voice?
O’Shaughnessy: WWhen I approached Tails, I approached him the same way, whether it was in a game, show, or movies, but on a larger scale. And we just talked about it being on a different level —He finds himself in different circumstances. So I think I take it from a more serious standpoint because the stakes are higher there, it’s not like, “Oh, it’s a racing game.” “We have to go.” “Come on, let’s go.” It all sounds very lively and energetic and all that, but it’s still fun.
That doesn’t mean it’s not fun, but there are dangerous situations that happen. So it is more stable. It’s more dangerous. It’s definitely more cinematic. But what I thought was so beautiful (about) this transformation is what we just did Phonetic boundaries Right before I started recording for the second movie. and Phonetic boundaries It’s a more serious game, there’s a lot more dialogue and there’s a lot higher stakes; (It’s) the same kind of thing. So (I was) prepared and ready, really, because I just did it Phonetic boundaries This was just a departure from any of the previous games.
io9: SAt the height of the transition from silliness to a darker genre, I was really happy that they kept some of the darker elements from Sonic Adventure 2 In the movie, Sonic Team was really put under a lot of stressful situations. TThe movie starts with them being like a band of brothers and having funAfter that, things get very dangerous very quickly. What was it like getting into that with Tails? I love how each brother represents a different type of kid.
O’Shaughnessy: Yes, everyone has their role He was very calm under pressure. There’s a lot of pressure, and it’s up to him at some points because he’s got the blueprints, he’s got the plan, and he’s kind of trying to keep the plan together. And I feel like his temper under pressure has definitely increased. He has some important things to do and he steps in and saves the day a few times, which is great.
io9: Yes, I loved it. HHe’s become so brave, which is so great. to Submit more about your career At io9 we love talking about your number one fandoms. What games, movies, or books really inspired your career path, and how did that lead to where you are today?
O’Shaughnessy: Anything animated when I was a kid, I watched as much as my mom would let me watch — because (you) couldn’t watch TV all day, but if I could, I would. WWhen I was a kid, we didn’t have access to all of that at all times. I was a fan of animation and the wonderful world of Disney Dolls And all those things. I was literally walking around my house being all of these characters. I’ll be Winnie the Pooh and Tigger, to Mrs. Piggy and Kermit, to all the Super Friends. Oh, my God, I loved all of the Super Friends. Pretty much, pick a genre and maybe I was a fan and walked around my house doing all these characters.
io9: What was the first sound you or your family realized you could do well?
O’Shaughnessy: I played Fozzie Bear and, for some reason, Tigger from Winnie the Pooh. I just did it and I don’t know where that came from, but I would look at a child or an animal and give them a voice. Whatever expression they had on their faces, I would give them a full monologue of the things I thought they were saying. I really wanted animals to be able to talk. So I gave them votes. but I feel like the dolls have been profound in developing this silly skill that I have.
