Here’s what happened to 15-year-old Amanda Sylvester, who collapsed during volleyball practice
According to Carter, Sylvester was at the rec center jogging alongside her teammate when surveillance footage suddenly showed her stopping and putting her hands on her knees. At that point, an adult apparently left the gym to get help and called 911.
Nine minutes later, an EMT was seen in the parking lot.
“EMT was able to stabilize the teen, who appeared alert and unable to speak. An ambulance was also requested for transport by Grady EMS via 911 and College Park Fire Rescue. Grady EMS never responded to the call.” The city of College Park confirmed in a later statement.
Eventually, surrounding passers-by helped Sylvester into her mother’s truck. Per Carter, EMTs believed Sylvester was having a seizure. By law, medical technicians are not legally permitted to transport patients to a hospital. According to Carter, only paramedics have this authority.

Per Carter, ambulance dispatch to the Sylvester location remained at zero throughout the ordeal. This is said to mean that ambulance demands were high at the time of the accident. Therefore, nothing was available for the 15-year-old’s emergency. In the end, she died in the hospital.
