The India national cricket team has managed to play the third Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 against the Australia national cricket team. The match between the two teams took place at the Gabba Stadium in Brisbane, and concluded on Wednesday (December 18).
The India national cricket team got a draw out of nowhere and will head into the fourth Test on the back of the series tied 1-1. The Rohit Sharma-led Australia National Cricket Team has dominated the first three days with both bat and ball and looks set to face defeat eventually.
Australia took the lead for the first three days of the Test
The Australia national cricket team were asked to bat first, and they had a fantastic outing with the bat. Riding centuries by Travis Head (152) and Steve Smith (101), along with half-centuries by Alex Carey (70), the Pat Cummins-led team posted a massive total of 445 runs.
In response, the visitors looked terrible with the bat. They lost wickets in bunches and were 74/5. Then Rahul (84 years old) and Ravindra Jadeja (77 years old) joined hands and led the rescue operation. But with about 30 runs left to avoid the follow-on, all the specialist hitters headed back to the hut.
India avoided the follow-up, and the matches ended in a draw
But Akash Deb (30) and Jasprit Bumrah (10*) put in a stunning effort with the bat and avoided the follow-on as their second round ended on 260, 185 behind.
With a huge lead, Australia tried to play an attacking style of cricket but they failed miserably. The pacers had Jasprit Bumrah, Akash Deb and Mohammed Siraj all over the batsmen as they picked up wickets at regular intervals.
Skipper Pat Cummins (22) was the stand-out as Australia lost seven wickets for 89 runs before the hosts declared, setting a target of 275 runs to chase. India could only bat with a lead of 2.1 before rain came and forced the umpires to call off the day, meaning the match ended in a draw.
How can India qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship
The draw in the Gabba Test has given the India national cricket team a huge chance of qualifying for the final of the ICC World Test Championship. To reach the summit clash, the Rohit Sharma-led side will need to win the next two matches in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy. If this happens, this will guarantee their direct qualification to the final.
If they can win just one of their remaining two matches, they will need a service from Sri Lanka. The Rohit Sharma-led team wants the island nation to win one match against Australia, or for the series between the two teams to end in a draw.
But if the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25 ends in a draw, the India national cricket team wants Sri Lanka to win by 1-0 or 2-0 in the series. The Rohit Sharma-led team cannot afford to lose both matches. If that happens, they want Pakistan to exonerate South Africa.
