Take-Two Interactive’s 2K label and Hangar 13 studio have unveiled Mafia: The Old Country, the next major installment in the long-running Mafia series.
Last year, Take-Two Interactive only teased the game’s existence, without any information about the game itself. This year, at the Game Awards, Take-Two shared a lot.
It’s been a long time since Mafia III, which was set in the era of social unrest in the 1960s. That game came out in 2016.
This upcoming new game is set in the summer of 2025 in Sicily. It begins as a trailer with the phrase “All the men in this family are related by blood.”
The game takes place in 1900 in Sicily. Introducing the brutal criminal underworld of 20th century Sicily, marking the beginning of a new crime saga for the acclaimed mafia franchise, Mafia: The Old Country is an all-new story set in the world of the mafia, returning to the roots of organized crime with a compelling new cast of characters.
As a linear, narrative-driven game, Mafia: The Old Country is a focused package perfect for fans looking to immerse themselves in an unfamiliar world full of danger and intrigue. The graphically stunning cinematic experience features a story grounded in the brutal world of organized crime that authentically immerses players in dangerous combat systems featuring stealth mechanics and high-stakes gunplay.
Mafia: The Old Country introduces a new original protagonist for players to embody. Enzo’s story unfolds at a time when skill with a dagger was a deadly asset, a sawed-off Lubara rifle was a firearm, murderous vendettas raged for decades, and Mafia men patrolled protection rackets on foot, horseback, or behind the wheel of cars in Turn of the century.
Through grit and determination, Enzo survived a childhood of slave labor in the hellish sulfur mines of Sicily. Now, through a twist of fate, he has the opportunity to join Don Torrisi’s crime family, and he will do whatever it takes to make a better life for himself. By taking the oath, Enzo bound himself to the Torrisi family code of honour, with all the force and hardship that entailed. He must never forget this simple truth: family makes sacrifices.
“Mafia: The Old Country is a love letter to gritty, old-fashioned mafia stories where players can discover the origins of organized crime,” Nick Baines, president of Hangar 13, said in a statement. “Everyone at Hangar 13 is committed to creating the most authentic and intense story in the series, and we can’t wait for players to experience the journey with Enzo.”
First established in 2002 with the release of the landmark game Mafia, the series has sold over 35 million copies across consoles and PC. Hangar 13 has spent 22 years immersing players in the brutal worlds of the Mafia, and now these franchise veterans are focusing on Mafia: The Old Country.
