A guest star from the Spider-Verse enters the world of Loki in Marvel’s TVA #1

It’s no surprise that the Marvel Cinematic Universe has had a recurring influence on stories published in Marvel Comics. The latest result of this synergy is the new Marvel Comics mini-series TVA.

TVA (TV stands for “Time Variance”, not “Tennessee Valley”) is an extra-dimensional organization designed to keep many timelines in check. Now, the Time Contrast Authority has its roots in Marvel Comics. (TVA Mobius agent M. Mobius is modeled after Marvel editor Mark Gruenwaldwho was obsessed with continuity and kept every story written in the Marvel offices clear.)

However, TVA has risen to new prominence due to its role in the MCU. This was the basic setup for the two-season Disney+ series “Loki,” in which the God of Mischief (Tom Hiddleston) was cast as a TVA agent. The Authority also played a major role in Marvel’s multiverse buddy comedy, “Deadpool & Wolverine.”

TVA works to bring comedy’s Time Variance Authority in line with that on screen. The comic is written by “Loki” writer Katherine Blair (and drawn by Perry Perez) and introduces several TVA characters exclusive to the MCU. However, the comic series will also have a guest star from the Spider-Verse: Spider-Gwen, aka Spider-Woman, aka Gwen Stacy of Earth-65. (Hailee Steinfeld also played Gwen in the “Spider-Verse” animated films.)

Marvel has now shared an exclusive preview of TVA #1 with /Film. The summary of the case stated the following:

For all times, always! The Time Variance Authority has long monitored the timeline, protecting it from dangerous variations that could cause everything to end. Now, as the organization begins to expand its tolerance for variants, it has recruited some new recruits from timelines that were erased from existence: Captain Peggy Carter, the super-soldier of her world; A desperate and aimless maneuver to lose his lady’s love; And… this can’t be true… Spider-Gwen?!? Has her world been destroyed?!? Writer Catherine Blair (LOKI Season 2) and artist Perez (CARNAGE, SPIDER-WOMAN) bring a touch of cinematic flair to the bureaucracy at the end of time!

Check out the cover of Issue #1 (drawn by Pepe Larraz) below, which reveals the three new recruits alongside the TVA originals from “Loki”: Sylvie, Hunter B-15, a Mobius-style Owen Wilson, OB, and Miss Minutes. :

The TVA of “Loki” and “Deadpool & Wolverine” has a retro TV aesthetic, and the inside recap page for “TVA” #1 emulates that. The page border is the orange border of the screen, the inside text of the page is colored as solid black, and the letters are green analogue text.

The first page shown shows Spider-Gwen hanging upside down from a web and narrating, as Spider-People are wont to do. The orange letters “TVA” were painted on the wall behind Gwen, and it turns out there’s a reason Gwen is still there.

Yes, Gwen is posing for an official TVA agent photo, taken by Miss Minutes. She mentions that she is “hiding” from her timeline and referring readers to her ongoing solo series, Stephanie Phillips’ “Spider-Gwen: Ghost Spider” (in which Gwen is transported to Earth-616 with some help from TVA).

Gwen then pulls up Mobius using a web, where Miss Minutes narrates the events “Loki” (until the end of season 2, “Glorious Purpose”) He mentions Mobius as his “partner” in MIA. Hunter B-15 then enters, and Gwen takes their argument with Miss Minutes as a cue to skate off. Are TVA characters meant to be? literally Are the same variants that appeared on “Loki”? Based on the Miss Minutes demo dump, this appears to be the case, but we’ll need the full issue for the entire context.
