Professor Francis Nkrumah (89), son of the first President of Ghana, Dr. Kwame Nkrumah, has died. Professor Nkrumah is said to have died on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

He was the firstborn child of Dr. Kwame Nkrumah. He had it with Mrs. Fannie Miller, who hailed from Elmina in the Central District.

Dr. Kwame Nkrumah is said to have met Miss Miller while he was teaching at the Catholic Church preparatory school in a town adjacent to Elmina called Amisano.

They struck up a relationship and Miss Miller gave birth to Professor Nkrumah before Dr. Kwame Nkrumah left Ghana to study at Lincoln University in the United Kingdom.

By the time Dr Kwame Nkrumah returned, the child (Professor Francis Nkrumah) who had applied to St Augustine’s College had done well at O-level.

Meanwhile, Nkrumah had become the government business leader by 1952 and was living with Francis at his Accra New Town residence. He eventually won the Francis Nkrumah Cocobod Scholarship to travel to Germany to study medicine.

The late Emeritus Professor Francis Nkrumah, who was the longest-serving director of the Noguchi Memorial Institute of Medical Research (NMIMR), has been praised for his role in polio eradication initiatives in Africa and for the various roles he played as a founding member of the Paediatrics Society. In October 2016, the WHO Africa Region honored Professor Francis Kwesi Nkrumah for his outstanding and tireless role in polio eradication initiatives in Africa.

Professor Nkrumah has received three awards for his work on the Africa Regional Certification Committee (ARCC), which was recognized by the NHO office in Ghana, and also as one-time Chair of the Regional Task Force on Immunization (TFI).

The cause of death was not immediately known.

But Indian author and editor Vijay Prashad announced his death in a post on the X website on Sunday, June 30, 2024.

The editor of Inkani Books, publishers of the latest edition of “The Revolutionary Ideas of Kwame Nkrumah,” quoted the introduction to the edition written by Dr. Francis Nkrumah in which he eulogized his father, saying: “I feel at the present time that Africa continues to miss (Kwame Nkrumah) unless we go back and reconsider.” On what Nkrumah actually means for Ghana and Africa.
