‘How much money is justified for…’: Delhi CA faces criticism for ‘corporate lesson’ after she refused to raise her maid by Rs 1,000

A Delhi-based chartered accountant is facing major criticism after a controversial post on LinkedIn regarding her maid’s resignation. Minal Goel sparked outrage after she was involved in the refusal to give a salary hike of Rs 1,000, from Rs 2,000 to Rs 3,000, framing the incident as a series of lessons for the company.

In her post, which has now gone viral, Joel narrated her maid’s resignation, saying: “My maid resigned yesterday. Why? Because we did not want to give her an increase of Rs 1,000.” She went on to quote her maid’s parting words: “Call only when you are ready to pay me Rs 3,000. And the confidence she had – oh my God!”

From this incident, Joel claimed to have learned three key lessons for the company:

– The importance of requesting an increase

– Evaluating the individual’s contributions

– Do not accept anything less than that.

She expressed her views on self-advocacy in the workplace, saying, “Don’t leave your personal growth in the hands of fate, God or other people. You must take charge of your own growth.”

However, her post quickly sparked backlash from social media users, who criticized her for “glorifying the exploitation of domestic workers.”

Many pointed out the hypocrisy in her message, highlighting the disparity between demands for fair compensation among white-collar workers and low wages for workers in the informal sector.

“Only on LinkedIn dot com will you find these qualified people who are giving classes at companies after exploiting their domestic help to the point of making them quit,” one user commented.

Drawing parallels with the difference in sectors, another user commented: “It’s a pure supply and demand game. The supply of maids in the market is abundant. If you lose one maid, you get another ready to settle for the same amount or less. They are no different from an unorganized workforce.” In white-collar companies, the only difference is that they will be a little more thoughtful, they will not leave without giving notice or they will continue with the same jobs that they have loans to pay for a lot of things in a nation like ours.”

The incident has reignited discussions about the treatment of domestic workers in urban areas like Delhi, sparking calls for greater awareness and respect for workers in the unorganized labor sector. As corporate leaders call for improved work-life balance, this incident highlights the stark contrast between the experiences of organized and unorganized work.
