Rohit Sharma’s Test fate was officially decided at the BCCI review meeting

Rohit Sharma’s days as Test captain of the India national cricket team are over. As per PTI reports, he learned that not only him as a captain, but his days as a player in the longest format of the game for the team are also over.

The decision was taken during a BCCI review meeting on Saturday which was attended by BCCI officials, chief selectors Ajit Agarkar, head coach Gautam Gambhir and skipper Rohit Sharma. Although it has not yet been announced, the selectors have moved forward from the opening knock and are now looking to the future roadmap.

Rohit is unlikely to be part of the Indian team for the England Test series, which will be played later. It is learned that Jasprit Bumrah is all set to lead the team through the tour and will definitely lead the team in the first Test at Headingley if all goes well.

Rohit has come under the scanner after his poor performances as a captain as well as a batsman since the last two Test series. Under his captaincy, the Indian national cricket team faced a 3-0 defeat at home to New Zealand, a first in Indian cricket.

India then faced a crushing 3-1 loss under his captaincy in the 2024-25 Border-Gavaskar Trophy and failed to qualify for the final of the ICC World Test Championship. Also, as a batsman, he looked very sharp as in the eight matches he scored only around 160 runs.

There were even reports that Rohit Sharma was planning to announce retirement from Tests after the fourth Test of the Border-Gavaskar Trophy 2024-25. But some well-wishers persuaded him not to retire and hence he thought of quitting himself instead of retiring.

However, Rohit Sharma himself stated that he is not going anywhere. But with reports claiming his days are over, it is unlikely he will return to the team. He also has no attempts to support his case, so things are not looking great for him at all.

Former national selector Devang Gandhi spoke about the next captain after Rohit Sharma. He said that the leadership role should be given to those who are confirmed selection in Test cricket. He highlighted Rishabh Pant’s contributions to the team and supported him as vice-captain. Speaking to PTI, he said:

“For me, it’s very simple. You look at the data and who is the surefire pick in Test cricket. Bumrah has played 45 Tests and Pant has 43. He (Pant) is 27 now and by the year when he was just 23, he single-handedly won India In one of his greatest Tests at the Gabba, he is a match-winner, a good bowler and should be vice-captain.
