There are many well-documented downsides to a screen-obsessed human life: poor REM sleep, decreased creativity, and decreased memory retention. Most people spend eight or more hours a day in front of a computer, often followed by screen use for entertainment. However, recently increasing research extols the benefits of handwriting, which has clear benefits for thinking and learning as it helps enhance reading, writing and communication skills.
“Writing is one of the most human endeavors. Many of the most extraordinary ideas and literature in history were handwritten, not printed,” Mark Tweener, CEO and founder of Nuwa Pen, said in a statement. “We have developed the world’s smartest, most advanced pen.” Which allows people to write, work, and take meeting notes without staring at the screen. Paper lovers get the best of both worlds, as Nuwa Pen and its free companion app allow users to easily share, search and organize handwritten notes.
How Nuwa Pen works: Writing. Digitization. synchronization.

You can grab the Nuwa Pen and write in a notebook, journal, loose piece of paper, or sticky note — just like a regular pen.
The Nuwa pen uses standard D1 ballpoint cartridges, while its AI and computer vision-powered cameras track what’s written and digitize it in the companion Nuwa+ app. Nuwa+ organizes notes into a digital and written log that users can sync with other productivity apps, such as email, calendar, and contacts.
Additional features and benefits include:
Digitization, easy copying and text conversion: Digitize notes from physical text to digital text, with the freedom to write on any paper and easy transcription from handwritten notes to typed text in just a few clicks;
Enhanced feedback and smooth synchronization: Nuwa Pen notes sync with multiple devices – smartphone, tablet or computer – and allows the writer to add their notes to their calendar, email or contacts apps to integrate handwritten notes with the digital world;
Search made simple: No more searching through endless pages of handwritten notes – simply type a keyword to find related notes;
Participation and collaboration: Share your Nuwa Pen notes with others and collaborate with them.
Writing board: Tracks user typing metrics;
Unlimited storage: Saves the writer’s notes forever;
Smart summary: Nuwa Pen summarizes a writer’s notes so they stay organized and on track.
“Unlike most emerging technologies that move humanity away from reality, Nuwa Pen takes a bold step back — toward authenticity,” Tweener said. “Nuwa Pen allows people to write again without missing anything in the digital world. The future of work and creativity won’t revolve around bigger screens or immersive glasses. With Nuwa Pen, it’s as simple as putting pen to paper.”
The Nuwa Pen is available for pre-order at a special price of $295 from now until mid-April 2025.
Founded in 2020, Nuwa Pen is a privately held company headquartered in Groningen, Netherlands.
