The Magpies have made it five straight league wins as Tottenham continue to struggle

Newcastle came from behind to claim their fifth successive Premier League victory after beating Tottenham 2-1 at the Tottenham Hotspur Stadium in an early start on Saturday.

Goals from Anthony Gordon and in-form Alexander Isak ensured Eddie Howe’s side took all three points in London, as their bid for fourth place gathers momentum.

Despite taking an early lead through Dominic Solanke, Tottenham suffered their third defeat in four games and remain in the bottom half of the table, without a league win since 15 December.

The Magpies, who have beaten the likes of Manchester United and Aston Villa in recent weeks, move level on the points with Chelsea, but the Blues are in action later today.

How the work unfolded

Solanke got Ange Postecoglou’s side off to the perfect start when he brilliantly headed home a Pedro Porro cross inside four minutes.

But the lead will not last long. Just two minutes later, with new England coach Thomas Tuchel watching from the stands, Gordon finished brilliantly from a tight angle to put Newcastle back on par.

If the former had shown some decisive attacking play, there might have been a great deal of good fortune about Newcastle’s second goal.

In the 37th minute, Jacob Murphy’s cross from the right hit Radu Dragosin’s outstretched leg and fell straight into the path of Isak, who slotted the ball into the net for the seventh straight league game.

In the end, this proved to be the difference between the two sides. Despite a string of late chances afforded to the hosts in the second half and twelve minutes of stoppage time at the end, Postecoglou’s side failed to convert any of their chances and will rue another frustrating afternoon.

Meanwhile, for Howe and Newcastle, their recent good run continues.
