Ivory Coast is the latest West African country to ask French forces to leave for good. This comes after similar decisions taken by Mali, Burkina Faso, Niger, Senegal and Chad. We analyze France’s shrinking military footprint in Africa – and ask what this means for the former colonial power’s relationship with the region.
