A large Central Florida entertainment resort and hotel have stopped using drones or canceled their drone-based offerings after several drones collided and fell from the sky during a separate holiday celebration in downtown Orlando, injuring a boy who required surgery.
Universal Orlando said this week it would pause the drone component of its CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular show, while Orlando World Center Marriott announced it had canceled its drone light shows scheduled during the holiday week.
The pause comes after an incident on Saturday, when drones fell on a crowd of thousands of people watching a show at Lake Eola Park in downtown Orlando. A seven-year-old boy was hit in the chest by a drone and needed heart surgery, according to his mother.
The accident is being investigated by the US Federal Aviation Administration and the National Transportation Safety Board.
Orlando World Center Marriott said other activities to celebrate 12 days of seasonal fun will continue, including visits from Santa Claus, family games and a New Year’s Eve fireworks display.
The non-drone elements of Universal Orlando’s CineSational: A Symphonic Spectacular show, which will be shown at the end of the night, will continue with synchronized fireworks, displays and fountains accompanied by soundtracks from the movies, theme park officials said.
“Guests can still enjoy the show every night at Universal Studios Florida,” the entertainment resort said in a statement.
