Trade between India and Pakistan remains minimal, and the suspension of trade relations is scheduled to affect Pakistan more, especially in sectors such as medicines and chemicals, which depend heavily on India.
In the wake of Paalgam’s terrorist attack, India announced a reduction in diplomatic relations with Pakistan as well as the suspension of Indus Water. After that, Pakistan suspended all trade with India.
Experts highlight that the bilateral trade between India and Pakistan has decreased significantly in the past five years. While the indirect trade that was directed across the third countries, especially the Middle East, is still flourishing, it is understood that the government evaluates how it can be reduced as well.
According to official data, India’s exports to Pakistan decreased by 56.91 % on an annual basis between April 2024 and February 2025 to 491 million dollars, while there were no imports. Compare this to the exports of the total goods of India during the fiscal year 25 of 437.42 billion dollars. The highest exports to Pakistan in the fiscal year included 25 pharmaceutical, sugar, pharmaceutical, and remaining chemicals and car components.
India’s exports to Pakistan reached $ 2.06 billion in the fiscal year 19 with imports of $ 495 million. Then, on the 24th year, exports picked up to $ 1.18 billion, while imports amounted to $ 3 million. Imports from Pakistan usually include elements such as Ayush and Herbal preparations, spices and fresh fruits.
“For Pakistan, imports from India, especially medicines and chemicals are important but constitute a secondary part of 0.06 % of foreign trade in India,” pointed out Ajay Sahai, General Manager and CEO of the Federation of Indian Export Organizations (FIEO).
This is not the first time that trade has been reduced. In the wake of the Polama terrorist attack in 2019, India canceled the situation of the most preferred country in Pakistan. Pakistan has suspended trade relations with India.
Recently, a report issued by the World Trade Research Initiative indicated that India’s indirect exports of Pakistan exceeding $ 10 billion annually and are directed by ports such as Dubai, Singapore and Colombo to official side business restrictions.
