A Dutch municipal hall admitted that it was “probably”, which accidentally got rid of 46 technical companies, including the printing of Andy Warhol to the former Dutch queen, during the renewal work last year.
The municipality of Mashhors said that the works, including printing a silk screen in the eighties, up to about 15,000 euros (12,800 pounds), disappeared during work in the city hall last year.
One of the investigations said that the artwork was stored in a cellar during the renewal, and it was possible that the lack of guidelines to store artwork was among the reasons that make them end up.
“This is not the way you deal with precious things. But this happened. We regret it.”
A statement issued by the municipality said on Thursday that the artworks were stored while working in a municipal hall in the UDEN – which is merged into the neighboring Landerd municipality to form the Maaashorst municipality.
“It is likely that the artworks were accidentally transferred with garbage,” they said.
A report issued by the investigators found that some artworks were stored in Wheelie boxes on the basement and that it was “not treated carefully,” according to the Daily Jimmamen Dagbrad newspaper.
The report concluded that “the property was not established correctly, and no policies and measures were established regarding renewal and lack of insufficient measures when artwork has turned into missing.”
She added that the lack of guidelines for registration, storage and preserving artwork was also contributing factors.
Local media reports that 46 artworks were worth about 22,000 euros (18,800 pounds) and that the Mashhors municipality said it was unlikely to be found at all.
Queen Beatrix has prevailed as the Queen of the Netherlands from 1980 until he abandoned in 2013, when she was succeeded by her son, King William Alexander.
Queen Beatrix’s printing was part of the Warhol’s Reigning Queens series, which consists of 16 colored publications of four kings, including the late Queen Elizabeth II, and Margareth II of Denmark – who was abandoned in 2023 – and Queen Netomebi Twala of Swatini, previously known as Swaziland.
Warhol, who is considered one of the greatest artists in the twentieth century, created publications in 1985 – two years before his death.
In November of last year, Warhol’s publications were stolen from Queen Beatrix and NTOMBI Twala – and during it – during Theft in a Dutch art gallery.
The local police said at the time that Thiefs took four screen prints from the MPV show in North Brabant province and escaped by car.
Queen Beatrix and Queen Netomebey’s photos were abandoned later because she does not fit the car, NOS said at the time.
