The appointment follows years of international pressure to reform the Palestine Liberation Organization and comes at a time when the Arab and Western powers imagine a broad role for the Palestinian Authority (PA) in post -war governance in Gaza.

It was established in 1964, which is charged with negotiation and signing international treaties on behalf of the Palestinian people, while the Palestinian Authority is responsible for government in limited parts of the occupied Palestinian territories.

The Palestine Liberation Organization is an umbrella organization that includes several Palestinian factions, but not Hamas and Islamic jihad groups.

The 64 -year -old Sheikh is a veteran leader of the Fatah Abbas movement, who dominates the Palestinian Authority, and is considered close to the president.

Analyst Arif Javal said that the new role was created to pave the way for someone to take matters from Abbas, “because there are many things that the Palestinian situation requires.”

“The Palestinian political system is already miserable, so I think all of these arrangements are an introduction to the creation of a successor to Roubas.”

The PLO Executive Committee is scheduled to hold another meeting next Saturday to appoint a new Secretary -General.
