We recently published a list of 15 recent activist investor campaigns. In this article, we will take a look at the place where Illumina stands, Inc. (NASDAQ: ILMN) against the other active investor campaigns.

Economic uncertainty and market fluctuation are some of the factors that feed the campaigns of active investors in 2025. In the first quarter, there was a 17 % jump in the activists’ campaigns, stressing how investors became highly amazing and increasingly pushed for strategic changes aimed at opening the value of shareholders.

“We are at a stage that activists continue to take advantage of all aspects of uncertainty,” said Jim Rosman, the global leader of the Barclays shareholders. “In early 2025, we saw more battles, more settlements and more seats that activists won more than we did this time a year ago.”

The United States remains a center for shareholders ’activity, as it represents more than half of the first quarter campaigns. Japan comes second with 16 campaigns, as it represents an increase of 45 % compared to the same period last year. New efforts this year follow a record number of active shareholders who target companies all over the world in 2024. In addition, campaigns are raised due to the instability of the market caused by President Donald Trump’s tariff, widespread demobilization of workers in US government agencies, and recession concerns.

According to the Barclays report, many active investors are still focusing on pressure for the changes of the Board of Directors. It also turned out that activists have an increasing way as part of the campaigns, after they won 51 seats in the board of directors, an increase of 34 % over the same quarter of last year.

Second, activists are also investing strategic and operational changes, believing that they may help open the hidden value. Finally, 26 % of campaigns were paid for integration and acquisition, a significant decrease from the historical average of 45 %.

Requirements of merger and acquisition procedures, such as selling a company or selling business units, are still being ignored to a large extent, which appear in only about 25 % of campaigns. Since the size of the deal around the world reached a record level in 2021, requests for integration and purchase decreased by half.

Although the number of activists’ campaigns was presented by shareholders’ activists in sustainability to the annual commercial meetings this year, the conflict over issues such as companies’ diversity initiatives still exists. As of February 21, investors who press companies on environmental, social and governance issues (ESG) submitted 355 proposals for shareholders, compared to 536 at the same time in 2024 and 542 at the same time in 2023.
