Former President Barack Obama praises Harvard University’s decision to reject the White House’s demands to change its policies or lose its federal funds, in his first position on social media to criticize the Trump administration since the opening day at least.
President Donald Trump freezes more than two million dollars (1.5 billion pounds) in Harvard’s federal funds because it will not make changes to employment, admission and educational practices that his administration said is the key to fighting anti -Semitism on the campus.
Obama, who was young at Harvard University, described the freezing as “illegal and pork.”
Other institutions called for Harvard’s progress not to give up Trump’s demands.
Obama wrote on social media: “Harvard University has provided an example of other institutions with the European Union-rejecting an illegal and medium attempt to strangle academic freedom, while taking concrete steps to ensure that all students at Harvard University can benefit from an environment of intellectual investigation, strict discussion and mutual respect.”
The former president, who graduated from Harvard University’s Law in 1991, or reprimanded government officials or government policies on social media since the White House left almost a decade ago. Usually, his participation during the elections is a Trump competitor, the president who was at the appropriate time, Kamala Harris, and since the opening day, he mainly published a greeting, personal messages and ideas about sport.
Obama is one of a handful of American political figures and university officials who are now talking against the Trump administration attempts to reshape the best universities in the country, by clicking on changing what they know and those who employ and threaten to cut research financing.
Hundreds of faculty at Yale University published a letter expressing their support for Harvard’s decision to reject the Trams administration demands.
“We stand together at a crossroads,” I read the message. “American universities face unusual attacks that threaten the principles of the basis in a democratic society, including freedom of expression, societies, and academic freedom. We write as one faculty members, to ask you to stand with us now.”
Many American universities receive a kind of federal financing that has been mostly set for scientific research in areas such as drug development.
Since Trump returned to his post in January, elite institutions such as Stanford University have been forced to freeze employment and reduce budgets in the face of federal funds.
Some funding has been stopped to pressure universities to take steps that the Trump administration says will fight anti -Semitism. Trump accused them of failing to protect Jewish students during the campus protests last year against the war in Gaza and support the United States for Israel.
“Universities need to address legitimate criticisms with humility and openness,” said the President of Stanford University Jonathan Levin and Provember Jenny Martinez on Tuesday in a statement praising Harvard University.
“But the way to make a constructive change by destroying the nation’s ability to scientific research, or through the government that leads a private institution.”
while Columbia University has abandoned some of Trump’s demands Earlier this month, Harvard University became the first major American university to follow the opposite approach.
“No government – regardless of the party in power – should not be dictated – what private universities can teach, who can accept and employ them, and any areas of study and investigation that they can follow,” Alan Garper, President of Harvard University, said in a statement on Monday.
The Massachusetts Institute of Technology (MIT) continued Harvard on Monday and also rejected the Trams administration demands.
Despite criticism, Trump stands quickly. On Tuesday, he made another strike against Harvard University, and threatened to cancel his tax exempt.
Universities, as well as many charities and religious groups, are exempt from paying federal income taxes. Nevertheless, this valuable tax breakdown can be removed if groups are engaged in political activities or moved away from their declared purposes.
