Brazil’s Supreme Court votes to put Bolsonaro on the trial to try to the alleged coup

A committee of the judges in the Brazilian Supreme Court accepted the charges against former President Jayyar Bolsonaro for an alleged attempt to stay in office after his 2022 election defeat, and ordered the former leader to try.

All five judges ruled on Wednesday in favor of accepting the charges against Paulo Gunnett. Last month, Gunnett Polsonaro and 33 others were accused of an attempt to coup that included a plan to poison his successor and the current President Luise Inosio Lula Da Silva and the killing of the Supreme Court judge.

The former president has repeatedly denied any violations.

Judge Valvio Dino said: “The coups are killed.” “It does not matter if that day happens, or in the next month or a few years later.”

If his conviction is proven in an expected trial later this year, Bolsonaro may face the prolonged prison sentence for two decades.

In his opening comments on Wednesday, Judge Alexander de Morais, who oversees the case, examined dramatic footage of Bolsonaro supporters who stand government buildings in violent scenes that reveal just one week after the opening of President Luiz Inosio Lalla Da Silva in January 2023.

Brazil’s Bolsonaro supporters

Supporters of former Brazilian President Gere Bolsonaro, who refused to accept his loss in the recent presidential elections, stormed government buildings in the country’s capital on Sunday, just one week after the opening of President Luiz Inacio Lula da Silva.

Polsonaro, the former right -wing army commander who held the position of President of Brazil from 2019 to 2022, is accused of five crimes, including an alleged attempt to violently abolish the rule of democratic law and coup.

Morris said that Bolsonaro led a “systematic effort to suspect electronic voting machines” used in Brazil, which is part of his efforts to undermine the elections he lost.

The Supreme Court began reviewing the charges against Bolsonaro and seven of his closest allies on Tuesday in a session attended by Bolsonaro voluntarily, sitting silently in the first row in the echo of US President Donald Trump’s trial last year.

Before the hearing of the historic court, Bolsonaro described the seashore gathering in Rio de Janeiro, hoping to seize the popularity of the congress and pressure of Congress to pass a draft law for the amnesty organization in favor of its imprisoned supporters.

The demonstration, which was proposed by some allies, could draw more than a million supporters, on a wide range of flipping after two independent companies found that between 20,000 and only 30,000 people appeared.

Bolsonaro insisted that he will run for the presidency again next year, despite the superior election court ruling in Brazil, which prevented him from running for public positions until 2030 for his efforts to discredit the country’s voting system.
