Netflix acquires streaming rights to the FIFA Women’s World Cup

Netflix has signed a deal with FIFA for exclusive US broadcast rights to the next two Women’s World Cup tournaments. . This contract covers events in 2027 and 2031.

Neither entity described the financial value of the deal, but it was reported to be the most important contract FIFA has ever signed with a major tournament live streaming service. FIFA President Gianni Infantino described it as a “historic moment for sports media rights” and “a truly historic day for broadcasting and for women’s football”.

This happened because FIFA dismantled media rights to the women’s event for the first time, which comes into effect after Fox broadcasts the next men’s World Cup in 2026. The 2027 Women’s World Cup is being held in Brazil. There is no location for the 2031 event yet, however .

That’s a pretty big deal for Netflix, given that FIFA reported that 1.12 billion people watched the 2019 Women’s World Cup, which the United States won.
