“7 non -coastal sisters”: Mohamed Eunus tells China Bangladesh is the only ocean gate

During his visit to China, the chief of the temporary in Bangladesh, Mohamed Yunus, at a direct stadium for Beijing: put Bangladesh as a major regional partner for production, logistics and trade.

“Seven states in East India – the Seven Sisters – do not care about them. They have no way to reach the ocean. We are the only guardian of the oceans,” and called on the deeper Chinese economic participation across Bangladesh.

“Building things, producing things, and things on the market. Nepal has electrical energy, Bhutan has hydroelectric energy, we can bring to our goal. You can produce in Bangladesh and sell in China,” he told officials.

The economic expert and member of the Economic Consultative Council of Prime Minister, Sanjev Sanyal, questioned the logic behind calling the internal geography of India on the economic field to China.

“It is interesting that Eunus puts a public appeal to the Chinese on the basis that 7 states in India are not coastal. China is invited to invest in Bangladesh, but what exactly is the importance of 7 Indian non -coastal states?” Sanyal published.

The comments came at a time when Bangladesh signed nine agreements with China after Yunus’ meeting with President Xi Jinping. Deals cover economic and technical cooperation, infrastructure, media, culture and health.

Bangladesh also welcomed the Chinese participation in the project of managing and restoring the Testa River – a previously linked plan to India under the Haseima government – and the initiative to update the port of Mongla.

Eunus used the meeting to highlight the 2024 student protests that led to a change in the system in Dhaka and urged China to play a “larger role” in ensuring peace and stability. He also requested Chinese water management support, describing China as “Water Management Master”, and requested a 50 -year plan from Beijing.

Xi Bangladesh described as a “boundary of trust” and confirmed a zero revenue for the goods Bangladesh until 2028. He suggested negotiations on the Free Trade and Investment Agreement and promised greater support for investment.

Eunus also called for a decrease in Chinese loan rates from 3 % to 1-2 % and a waiver of commitment fees. Bangladesh was placed as a transport base for Chinese manufacturers looking to compensate for the American definitions.

China has hosted multiple delegations from Dhaka in recent months, including advisers, opposition leaders and militant religious groups. Yunus is now scheduled to attend the Bimstec summit in Bangkok, where he requested a meeting with Prime Minister Narendra Modi – which India has not confirmed yet.

While Beijing expands its role in the region, Yunus’s situation in Bangladesh indicates a clear shift in the diplomatic and economic compatibility in Dhaka.
