2024 box office hits and flops: ‘Wicked’ rises and ‘Madame Web’ flops

Several films soared at the box office in 2024, although some did not live up to their highly anticipated releases.

Here’s a look at some of the other best and worst-performing films of 2024.

‘evil’

The much-anticipated Wicked, starring Ariana Grande and Cynthia Erivo, was released last November and has already grossed $580 million at the worldwide box office. The musical brought in $392 million domestically.

The second part of the series “Wicked: For Good” will be released in November 2025.

“Dune: Part 2” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire”

Both “Dune: Part Two” and “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” did impressively well at the box office.

“Dune: Part Two,” led by Zendaya and Timothée Chalamet, has grossed $714 million worldwide and $282 million domestically. The third part of the “Dune” series is expected to be released in 2026.

The animated film “Godzilla x Kong: The New Empire” has grossed $571 million worldwide and $196 million domestically.

“It ends with us”

Blake Lively in “It Ends with Us” It topped the box office during its initial release in August.

The romantic drama starring Lively and Justin Baldoni exceeded expectations with a $50 million debut.

“It Ends with Us” was released at the same time as Deadpool & Wolverine, which starred Lively’s husband Ryan Reynolds. The films ranked first and second, marking the first time in 34 years that a husband-wife duo has topped the box office. The last time audiences enjoyed a moment like this was in 1990 when Bruce Willis’ “Die Hard 2” and Demi Moore’s “Ghost” took the top two spots.

While “It Ends With Us” was a box office hit with impressive numbers, the promotional tour was marred by speculation about drama between Lively and Reynolds and justin baldoni, Who directed and starred in the film.

Lively has since filed a complaint against Baldoni for sexual harassment, retaliation, and infliction of emotional distress.

Dwayne “The Rock” Johnson and Chris Evans’ “Red One” sits in the middle of IMDb pro’s list of 2024 box office receipts.

The holiday film, which was released in November and is still in theaters, has grossed nearly $182 million worldwide and $95 million domestically.

“Autumn Man”

The Fall Guy, starring Ryan Gosling and Emily Blunt, did not perform as well as expected.

The film was released in May and grossed $181 million worldwide and about $93 million domestically.

Both stars were excited about the “Barbenheimer” phenomenon, but the remake of the classic TV show didn’t do as well as Blunt’s “Oppenheimer” and Gosling’s “Barbie,” which were released last year.
